Dr. Shields traveled with the Paul Robeson (PRAISE) Academy scholars and family members for 1 week across the border from the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Scholars had the opportunity to fully engage with the local community, learning about the cultural differences and similarities between the island of Hispaniola and the United States.
Additionally, participants were able to give back by participating in two days of community service at a local orphanage. Students helped with painting, and completing some handy work at the school and clinic.
