This interactive seminar explores the dynamics of cultural diversity, including cross-cultural communication and encounters. It will include strategies for creating safe spaces to address growing diversity, persistent disparities, and to promote health and mental health equity. In addition, Crossing the Border: Enhancing Relationships through Cultural Competence is designed to build cultural competency for professionals so that they can be more successful in a globalized workplace. Dr. Shields’ goal is to help to boost your knowledge and skill sets as well as strengthen your ability to respond to the needs, beliefs, behaviors, perceptions, and preferences of the diverse communities you serve. This interactive seminar will also use a framework that combines transformative social justice pedagogy, educational narrative, and Ubuntu praxis to guide leaders into a deeply reflective experience that explores some of the core paradoxes inherent in the journey of leading educational communities. The workshop will use excerpts from What I Learned in the Midst of KAOS: The Making of an Ubuntu Teacher as points of discussion during the workshop. As a result of participation in this workshop, participants will have an increased self-efficacy with regards to their own place within the educational and social landscape in which they lead.
