83rd Annual Association for Social and Behavioral Scientist Conference

March 8 @ 8:00 am - March 10 @ 5:00 pm

The Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Inc., a professional organization for higher education scholars, was founded by the late Dr. Theophilus E. McKinney, Dean of Johnson C. Smith University (formerly College) in Charlotte,  North Carolina. McKinney indicated that many of the economic, social, and political problems faced by Black  Americans at that time were different from those experienced by other racial groups. He organized and held the Conference on Social Science Offerings in Negro Colleges at Johnson C. Smith College on October 26, 1935. The goal of the meeting was to bring together social science teachers in Negro colleges (now, Historically Black Colleges and  Universities) to discuss common problems and to determine a purpose, points of view, and guiding principles in the teaching of social science courses.
